Artist Clark Whittington, a conceptual artist that is, started Art-o-mat in 1997 to get affordable art into the hands of everyday people. The company has around 200 vending machines spread across the country, each selling various art creations at $5 a piece. What Is an Art-o-matic Machine?

Art-o-mats sell art using its vending machines, which are retired old cigarette vending machines refurbished and adapted to sell packaged art pieces mostly in art museums. Artist Clark Whittington notes that the decision to go with cigarette machines was because when he launched the business in 1997, they had been banned and became widely available.

Art-o-mats that can be found in art museums can carry art from different local artists, just as vintage cigarette machines have varied brands of cigarettes. To get a piece of art from Art-o-mats, put a $5 bill in the bill acceptor, yank the knob where the item you want is, and voilà; out comes the piece of art!

Artist Clark Whittington says he got the idea to start selling art out of old cigarette machine when he saw his friend have a Pavlovian reaction to snack wrappers. The friend would hear a wrapper crinkle and then get an impulse to grab something from a snack vending machine. It is impressive how a successful art vending machine business can be born from such a simple observation.

North Carolina

North Carolina hosted the first Art-o-mat machine. Conceptual artist Clark Whittington created the first Art-o-mat out of a recently-banned old cigarette machine and used it to sell his paintings at Penny University, a local cafe in Winston-Salem, where he was set to have his first solo show. The cafe owner loved the setup so much that he asked Clark to keep the machine there permanently.
